Backend/Distributed Systems Engineer

We are looking for engineers who are interested in tackling gnarly big-data problems. We analyze tens of millions of new documents a day, contributing to a corpus numbering in the billions. Our back-end system must be able to generate real-time recommendations on this corpus while constantly processing new data.

We want smart, motivated and flexible all-around developers who can work well on a team. If you can demonstrate those qualities, then inexperience with large-scale systems won’t hold you back. That said, these qualities will help:

  • Experience building flexible distributed systems
  • A keen intuition for fault-tolerant architectures
  • Familiarity with C++ and Python
  • Knowledge of the vagaries of the AWS ecosystem
  • Real-time analytics background

Web Developer

We are looking for skilled web developers who are interested in building the future of intelligent news using the latest web technologies and practices. At Zite, you will have the opportunity to be involved in every step of the development including prototyping, bug fixing, and large-scale feature development. We have a small development team, so your ideas and talents will directly impact the product, and our nonhierarchical structure means you will have the ability to influence areas of the product far beyond your title.

The most important quality you can possess is raw programming ability and a vigurous appetite for learning new skills. That said, we would be inclined toward candidates who have:

  • HTML5/CSS3/jQuery experience
  • Knowledge of modern web client development (for instance, using Backbone.js)
  • Experience optimizing sites for performance, especially on mobile devices
  • Experience developing hardware-accelerated animations and transitions
  • A sense for quality user experience and UI
  • Comfort with a fast-paced environment
